As a female athlete growing up in the 70's and 80's and as coach of females in the 90's, I was treated as a second thought, a background noise, and sometimes even a nuisance. As a lesbian, I was seen as evil, a sinner, and a disgrace. The treatment from those in charge left me angry, depressed, and unmotivated and yet I was still able to become a Two-Time Olympian and National Championship Coach. Imagine what could have been accomplished with support.
The key to getting people to give more, be more, and accomplish more is giving them the recognition and acceptance they deserve.
