Many people often use the terms equality and equity interchangeably, however, they are not the same.
When considering best practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, many leaders feel most comfortable with the concept of equality- treating everyone the same, giving everyone the same resources.
The problem with this notion, is that equal practices do not account for systematic disparities that disenfranchise employees with marginalized identities.
The only way to achieve parity (or true equality) between all groups, is to intentionally lead with equitable practices that address systemic barriers and promote inclusion in the workplace.
