Schools as Clinics: Implementing the Culturally Appropriate Respo

If only education was more like medicine! Culturally and linguistically diverse learners often enter school with lived experiences that may hinder full participation. In the "schools as clinics model" and using my CARTI (Culturally Appropriate Response to Instruction) Framework, I focus on shifting the paradigm of education, and the mindsets of educators, to create equitable provision of instruction and equal healthy literacy outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

In this workshop, you will
• Gain awareness of the role of cultural connectedness to their learners in creating an instructional environment that is equitable, particularly for culturally and linguistically diverse learners who are historically marginalized, underserved, and unserved.
• Gain awareness of the benefit of shifting from a data-first to a culture-first instructional model, still holding true to the science of reading.
• Learn how to begin implementing the CARTI (Culturally Appropriate Response to Instruction) Framework, providing literacy instruction focused on the needs of the culturally and linguistically diverse learner through an equity-based, culturally relevant lens.
